2 Sulu cops wounded in Sayyaf ambush

Posted to the Mindanao Examiner (Aug 19, 2019): 2 Sulu cops wounded in Sayyaf ambush

Abu Sayyaf rebels on Monday ambushed 2 policemen escorting government teachers in the southern Philippine province of Sulu, officials said.

Officials said the Patrolman Nijar Awwalon and Corporal Angelo Canapi were wounded in the attack which
occurred in the village of Igasan in Patikul town, a known lair of the pro-ISIS group blamed for the spate of terrorism in Sulu, one of 5 provinces under the Muslim autonomous region.

The attack sparked a brief firefight and only stopped after the rebels fled towards the hinterlands. There were no reports of civilian casualties.
It was unclear why no military checkpoints were set up in the area considering the presence of rebels in the town.

There was no immediate statement from town officials on the daring ambush.

Last week, Abu Sayyaf gunmen killed a Special Forces soldier and a pro-government militia in an ambush in Talipao town. The soldier and his companion were travelling on a motorcycle in the village of Kagay when rebels ambushed the duo.

Two children nearby were also hit killing one of them and wounding the other. The attack occurred during the Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha and while the whole region is in an extended state of martial rule. (Zamboanga Post)
