KIBAWE, Bukidnon -- A large number of rebel supporters gathered recently at the square in Cagawasan, Kibawe town to openly renounce their support to the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army (CPP-NPA).

In a public declaration and mass oath-taking ceremony during assembly in barangay Cagawasan, the surrendered CPP-NPA supporters signed the Pledge of Commitment and vowed to support the government by declaring the CPP-NPA as “persona non grata.”

Punong Barangay Marissa Bayer who welcomed the surrenderees and led the ‘Commitment Wall’ signing said “these former rebel supporters commit to withdraw their aid to the CPP-NPA as they reassuringly recited and signed the ‘pledge of commitment,’ which is just in time when the council crafted Barangay Resolution No. 14 early this June, declaring CPP-NPA as persona non grata.”

Kibawe town mayor Minerva C. Casinabe, who joined barangay Cagawasan in welcoming the surrendered rebel supporters urged the residents to help the Philippine Army’s 88IB in keeping the barangay away from any harm and threats instigated by the terrorists.

“To the Philippine Army, thank you for tirelessly protecting and serving the people of barangay Cagawasan. We want nothing else here but peace. ‘Cagawasan’ means ‘freedom’. Hence, we have freedom from fear, threats, and domination by the terrorists. We must strive to live in freedom by choosing to live harmoniously in a safe haven where peace and security reigns,” the mayor said.

A “Hatud Serbisyo (service for the people)” caravan also highlighted the community gathering, where more than 300 residents availed of the services offered for free by the local government and national agencies such as tooth extraction, urinalysis, pre-natal checkup, immunization, haircut, distribution of medicines, and family planning and adolescent health consultation, among other services.

In his message, 88th Infantry “Maringal” Battalion commander LtCol Franklin F. Fabic said the activity aims to uplift lives in the neighborhood that could help attain peace and development in the community.

“We are your true soldiers; we are here to protect you. Your support and cooperation will bring us together to our yearning for a peaceful and comfortable life,” he said.

This event is in line with the government’s call to end local communist armed conflict in the country as stipulated in Executive Order No. 70 (EO 70) of President Rodrigo Duterte.

EO 70 aims to address the root causes of insurgency through the government’s focused, coordinated, and sustained delivery of basic services in poor, conflict-affected, and geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas.
