Suspected communist rebels ambushed and killed Wednesday afternoon two Army soldiers in Arakan, North Cotabato.
Capt. Jose Marie Molina, Arakan town police chief, said the soldiers were on a motorbike and were heading back to an Army detachment in Barangay Kinawayan when suspected New People’s Army militants attacked them.
“The soldiers, who were in civilian clothes and unarmed, had just conducted an orientation about the Community Support Program in the village and were heading back to their base when fired upon,” Molina said in an interview by reporters here Thursday.
Killed were Privates Lendo Borja and Paul Devara, both assigned to the 90th Infantry Battalion of the 901st Infantry Brigade.
Pursuit operations are underway against the armed men, the police said.
