From the Mindanao Times (Sep 24): Cafgu recruits trained
Around 480 recruits of the Citizen Armed Force Geographical Unit (Cafgu) are undergoing training to serve as an additional force of the Philippine Army’s 1003rd Infantry Brigade.
Brig. Gen. Ernesto Torres, the commander of the 1003rd IB based in Barangay Mahayag, Bunawan District, told TIMES that four CAFGU companies under his command are joining the 45-day training.
Each company has a maximum of 120 members.
Torres said three companies will be deployed in the far-flung areas of city: two in the third district and one in the second district.
The remaining company will be assigned in Talaingod, Davao del Norte.
“We are relentless in our efforts in getting as much security personnel as possible,” Torres said.
He said the Cafgu members, as additional forces, are great help to the regular troopers who are conducting military operation and community support program in the far-flung barangays.
“In Davao City, we have special CAFGU (members) being funded by the city and trained by the 1003rd brigade,” he said, adding that most of the recruits are residents in the hinterlands where they will be detailed.
In sending one company to Talaingod, Torres said the town needs a focused attention.
He said the situation in Davao del Norte, except in Talaingod, is manageable.
Aside from doing military operation and recruitment of personnel in the area, Torres said they are also conducting civil-military operation and community support program activities.
“So with those activities we do in Talaingod we are optimistic that sooner we would be able to normalize the activity in the area,” Torres added.
