CAMP MELCHOR F DELA CRUZ, Upi, Gamu, Isabela – The 5th Infantry (Star) Division has deployed more troops in Cagayan to secure the province from Communist NPA Terrorist (CNT) extortion and terrorism activities in relation to the upcoming Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections.
Just recently, the troops of the 17th Infantry Battalion have engaged the CNT group at Brgy Balanni, Sto Nino, Cagayanin response to information from civilian that the CNT group are conducting reorganization for a possible terrorist activity in the province.
According to LTC Camilo Saddam, Commanding Officer of 17IB, his troops confirmed the presence of the CNTs in the area leading to a firefight that lasted for 30 minutes. He also said that five of his troops were hit by improvised explosive devices (IED) while pursuing the terrorists.
MGen Perfecto M RimandoJr, Commander, 5th Infantry Division, confirmed the regrouping of CNTs for terrorist activities. “The series of skirmishes between the 17IB troopers and the CNTs, confirmed the regrouping of the terrorist group in Zinundungan Valley. That is what we are preventing, the launching of their plans against the people, local officials and our troops in connection with the upcoming election.”
“To address the terroristic plans of the CNT groups, we need to push more troops to cover the areas of concern in Cagayan in collaboration with the Police and local government Officials. If we desire to have a peaceful community, we need to make a firm stance to get rid of the NPA terrorists – the spoiler of peace and development.”
