From the Manila Bulletin (Apr 22): Suspected communist rebels step up attacks on gov’t in Negros Occ.
Suspected communist rebels have stepped up the attacks on the government as they killed a soldier in Leyte and harassed government militiamen in Negros Occidental, police said today.

In Leyte, Cpl. Jose Saycon Jr died in a brief but intense gun battle between communist rebels and members of the 7th Infantry Battalion in Barangay San Juan, Mahaplag town late yesterday afternoon.
The soldiers were conducting patrol in Barangay Maligaya when they chanced upon at least seven communist rebels in Sitio Canayan at around 6 p.m. this triggered a clash.
In Negros Occidental, a small group of militiamen were conducting regular patrol in Barangay San Isidro in Eb Magalona town when they were shot at by at least three armed men believed to be communist rebels also yesterday.
The armed men immediately fled when the militiamen were about to engage them.
The 4,000-strong New People’s Army (NPA) has been waging more than four decades of armed struggle against the government.
Attempts for a peace agreement by various administrations always end up in the peace negotiations bogging down due to some demands from both camps.
