From DWDD AFP Civil Relations Service Radio Website (Mar 26): BOOSTING NAVAL CAPABILITY  |  Arrival of additional TC90 Aircraft from Japan

CAMP GEN EMILIO AGUINALDO, Quezon City (DWDD) – Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana has expressed the Filipino nation’s heartfelt appreciation of Japans donation of surveillance aircraft’s with the arrival of the additional TC-90 aircraft’s.

The said donation was originally a Lease Contract but was changed into a grant pursuant to the Letter of Agreement signed by the Secretary with the Japan Ministry of Defense (JMOD) last November 2017, after the amendment of Japan Government’s Self-Defense Force Act that allowed the donation of excess defense and military equipment to partner countries like the Philippines.

Sec Lorenzana admits that much has still to be done to boost the military capability equipment in order to meet a number of persistent Maritime Security Challenges which ranges from territorial disputes with China and other Southeast Asian nations over the ownership of resources-rich islands in the West Philippine Sea, to piracy, movement of armed insurgents in the Sulu Sea, and other transnational crimes.

He assured the nation, that their Defense Department is doing all that they can do to enhance the countries capability and modernize our military pursuant to the AFP Modernization Program.

Lastly, he assured the Japanese government that their donation will definitely boost the Philippine Navy’s capability in providing humanitarian assistance, and conducting disaster relief operations, it would double the navy’s patrol range from the existing capability of current aircrafts and it will also enhance the Maritime Air Surveillance and Intelligence Gathering capability of the military.
