THE ARMED Forces of the Philippines and Philippine National Police remained on high alert status as communist rebels reportedly started conducting a series of attacks ahead of the anniversary of the New People’s Army.

In an interview on Wednesday at the sidelines of the change of command ceremony of Eastern Mindanao held at Naval Station Felix Apolinario held at Camp Panacan, AFP chief, Gen. Rey Leonardo Guerrero, said at this time of the year, they are already anticipating intensification of attacks and atrocities from the NPA.

“We have already standing orders to monitor their movement and all units will be on full alert status,” Guerrero said.

In a separate interview, Chief Supt. Manuel Gaerlan, director of Police Regional Office (PRO) XI, said they already reminded police officers to be extra vigilant.

“We all know that during the anniversary of the Communist Party of the Philippines, they conduct tactical offensives and attacks against the government forces and installations,” Gaerlan said.

“As of this time, we are still on full alert status since the Martial Law is still in effect until Dec. 31 this year,” he said.

Recently, the communist rebels staged a series of attacks Davao City and Caraga region.

On Monday, a police officer assigned to the Baguio Police Precinct of Davao City Police Office (DCPO) was shot to death by NPA members while letting them hitch on his motorcycle at Sitio Luman, Barangay New Valencia, Tugbok district.

At 1:40 p.m. on that same day, NPA rebels abducted two police officers at an outpost along the national highway in Barangay Bad-as, Placer, Surigao del Norte. They were identified as PO2 Alfredo Lauro Degamon Jr. and PO2 John Paul Mondaya Doverte, both assigned at the Placer Municipal Police Station.

The following day, a mobile patrol was ambushed resulted in the death of a four-month-old baby and a police officer in Talakag, Bukidnon.
 
In Agusan del Norte, communist rebels also robbed and torched two trucks.
