DWDD: IN OUR HEARTS | Remember the Sacrifice of Soldiers, Police who died in Marawi

From DWDD AFP Civil Relations Service Radio Website (Nov 2): IN OUR HEARTS  |  Remember the Sacrifice of Soldiers, Police who died in Marawi

CAMP GEN EMILIO AGUINALDO, QuezoN City (DWDD) – This year’s commemoration of All Saints Day was more sentimental to the families and loved ones of the 158 soldiers and 7 police who made the ultimate sacrifice in liberating the City of Marawi.

According to Armed Forces of the Philippines spokesperson MGen Restituto Padilla, the sacrifice of these men in uniform should be remembered and emulated.

The siege of Marawi gave birth to many stories of bravery and heroism of our Men and Women in uniform proving their dedication to service and the love of country.

One particular story that stood out was that of Army Captain Rommel Sandoval, Company Commander, 11th Scout Ranger Company, 4th Scout Ranger Battalion, First Scout Ranger Regiment, Special Operations Command.

While on a mission in Marawi, Capt. Sandoval was trying to retrieve a comrade who was caught in a crossfire. While trying to approach the wounded comrade, Capt Sandoval was hit, pinning both of them in the process.

But in his desire to save his comrade, Capt Sandoval used his body to shield his equally wounded partner from further harm, thus saving his soldier friend but sacrificing his own life. He was not able to fulfil his promise of vacation with his family. His remains now lie in state at the Libingan ng mga Bayani. AES/ALS/Video Marvin Arribe
