6 die in Lanao del Sur clash

From the Sun Star-Cagayan de Oro (Dec 7): 6 die in Lanao del Sur clash

BUTIG, Lanao del Sur -- Five members of the Maute terror group and a soldier were killed Wednesday, December 7, in the ongoing military operations to flush out the group in the town.

Three other soldiers, all Scout Rangers, were wounded in the operation.

Colonel Roseller Murillo, commanding officer of Army’s 103rd Infantry Brigade (IB) based in Kampo Ranao in Marawi Ciy, said the firefight took place in western and southern part of a forested hill in the village of Sandab at about 7 a.m. Wednesday, December 7.

A military source identified the wounded members of 1st Scout Ranger Company of the 1st Scout Ranger Battalion under 103rd IB as Private First Class (PFC) Lloyd Saranglao, PFC Herbert Bulok-bulok and PFC Amelito Lumingkit.

The three were brought to an undisclosed hospital as well as the name of the lone fatality.

"Based on the report from the ground, an estimated 100 fully armed local terrorists were encountered by government forces ," Murillo said.

Murillo said operations against the Maute group will continue until the group, which claimed responsibility for the Davao City bombing earlier this year, is neutralized.

"The firefight is still going on while other military troops occupied the villages left by Maute local terrorists group after the first week of intense firefight," Murillo said close to noontime Wednesday.

He said the continuous offensive aimed to neutralize the Maute group that allied themselves to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria terror organization.

The offensive started on November 26 after the Maute group occupied an unused municipal hall of Butig, Lanao del Sur.

To date, the Maute group suffered 63 slain followers and 17 wounded while two soldiers died and 39 others wounded.
