Two suspected New People’s Army (NPA) were killed in an
encounter with government troops in a remote village in Lake
Sebu town in South
Cotabato on Friday morning.
Lt. Col. Benjamin Leander, commanding officer of the Army’s
27th Infantry Battalion, said their troops were patrolling a portion of Sitio
Lampinik in Barangay Ned at around 7:50 a.m. when they clashed with the rebels.
He said their scout platoon launched combat patrols in the
area after receiving a tip from concerned residents about presence of the NPA
rebels.
“We have long been monitoring the movements of the rebels
there in coordination with local residents and village officials,” he said in a
radio interview.
Leander said their troops mainly engaged with nine heavily
armed rebels, who were believed to be members of the NPA’s Guerilla Front 73.
Two of the rebels were killed during the encounter while no
one was hurt on their side, he said.
Recovered from the slain rebels, who have yet to be
identified, were an M14 rifle at an AK-47 rifle.
He said their remains have been brought to the center of
Barangay Ned for proper identification and disposition.
