Minister Retno Claims Abu Sayyaf Group`s Movement is Detected

Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno L.P. Marsudi said that government remains to do the rescue effort of the ten crew member of Indonesian ship being held hostage by the Abu Sayyaf group in Philippines.

She said within the last three days, the Foreign Ministry has been intensifying the coordination and communication with the Philippine government,

"We’ve gained information of the movement, position, and condition of the hostages from time to time," Retno said at a press conference in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Jakarta on Thursday, March 31, 2016.

Minister Retno delivered information on the latest development of the ten Indonesian hostages for only about two minutes without holding question and answer session.

Even she did not tell any detail following the position and condition of the hostages.

The ten crew members were sailing on Anand 12 ship with 7,000 tons of coal on it along with TB Brahma 12 vessel; both departed from Putting River of South Kalimantan and were heading to Batangas, South Philippines on March 15.

It was reported later that Abu Sayyaf militia group hijacked ten crew members of Anand 12 ship while the TB Brahma was released and found by the Philippine Languyan police in Tawi-Tawi province.

 At the press conference, Retno said the government is still compromizing the best option to rescue the hostages.

"As I have told last Tuesday, the safety of the crew members is our priority," she said.

Retno explained the communication between her and the Philippine Foreign Minister had been very intensive. She knew from the latest communication with the Philippine Foreign

Minister Thursday morning that Philippines' support was very crucial in any means of hostage rescue. She said Indonesia appreciates the coordination and support from the Philippine government.

Retno added that her colleagues are also communicating with their counterparts in Philippines. Besides, the Foreign Ministry has also communicated with the crew members’ families.
