Government agents on Tuesday arrested in Cavite an alleged extortionist preying on former guerillas during the Japanese occupation in the Philippines, according to a report by GMA News' John Consulta on "24 Oras."
Agents of the National Bureau of Investigation-Cavite District Office arrested Michael De Guzman during an entrapment operation in Tanza town after one of his victims informed authorities about his extortion scheme.
Citing probers, the report said De Guzman would promise his victims a sum of $604,000 or about P20 million from the United States government as a reward for helping the United States Army Forces in the Far East (USAFFE), a military formation of the United States Army active from 1941 to 1946.
De Guzman allegedly would tell his victims that the reward would be forfeited if they do not immediately give P250,000.
The suspect has already received a million pesos from his victims, according to the NBI.
De Guzman, for his part, denied that he was into extortion. "Mayroon akong tinatanggap na pera pero dahil utos nila sa akin 'yun,” he said.
De Guzman will be charged with robbery and extortion, the "24 Oras" report said.
"Diyos na ang bahala sa kaniya," said 88-year-old Constancia Arias De Cabuhat, one of his supposed victims. The report said the NBI-Cavite is encouraging other victims to come forward and help strengthen the case against De Guzman.
