MILF: MILF welcomes Duterte in Camp Darapanan

Posted to the MILF Website (Feb 28): MILF welcomes Duterte in Camp Darapanan

Camp Darapanan, Maguindanao – The leadership of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) welcomed Davao City Mayor and presidential aspirant Rodrigo Duterte on Saturday, February 27 at Camp Darapanan in Sultan Kudarat town, Maguindanao.

Ghadzali Jaafar, 1st Vice Chairman of the MILF headed the MILF in receiving Duterte and his delegation with Sammy Al Mansor, Chief of Staff of the Bangsamoro Islamic Armed Forces (BIAF), along with some members of the MILF Central Committee.

Duterte declared that he did not come to Darapanan to campaign but to discuss his advocacy for federalism that he sees as another way of resolving the decades-old conflict in Mindanao.

Jaafar asked Duterte on how the ministerial form of government that the Bangsamoro wants relates to federalism.

Duterte admitted that the establishment of a federal government may take time and that the consensus from the people should be made.

“If federalism won’t push through, I will convince Congress to pass the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) and that would be the template for federal states,” Duterte said.

The presidential aspirant hoped that the MILF would remain steadfast despite the failure of 16th Congress to pass the BBL and not to take any act that may derail the peace process.

“It’s only a matter of short period and we will talk again. We can talk better, understand better, and come up with better solution,” Duterte said.

He also vowed to correct the historical injustices committed to the Moros as he also express his full support to the quest of Bangsamoro people for right to self-determination if elected as president.

Furthermore, he vaunted that he is more familiar with the Bangsamoro issues and the only one among other candidates that is talking about the Bangsamoro historical injustices committed by what he described as ‘oppressors’.

The mayor also reiterated his relationship with the Bangsamoro people saying that one of his daughters is married to a Moro aside from being a native Mindanaoan, he said.

Duterte came from Davao city via a private chopper that landed at the Maguindanao old capitol in Simuay, Sultan Kudarat at 11:45 in the morning. The meeting ended at 1:30 in the afternoon. Duterte and his delegation proceeded to Cotabato city plaza to meet his thousands of supporters who has been waiting, eager to see him personally and listen to his platform of government.

Duterte’s running mate Alan Peter Cayetano did not showed up at Camp Darapanan with Duterte never mentioned about his whereabouts.

Cayetano is a staunch critic of the BBL who categorized the Moro Front and the Moro people as ‘terrorists”. In one of the Senate’s investigations of the Mamasapano tragedy last year, Cayetano went further by insulting and humiliating some leaders of the Moro Front. The Moro people were so badly hurt and can’t forget that ill-fated day in the Senate’s chamber.

ARMM Regional Governor Mujiv Hataman who was also present rebuked Cayetano and defended MILF leaders and the Moro people saying that they (Moros) are not ‘terrorists’.
