Troops, NPA rebels clash in Zamboanga del Sur

From the Philippine News Agency (Dec 11): Troops, NPA rebels clash in Zamboanga del Sur

Government troops recovered communication equipment abandoned by New People's Army (NPA) rebels following a five-minute firefight in the nearby town of Guipos, Thursday.

Lt. Col. Alvin Luzon, commander of the Army’s 53rd Infantry Battalion, disclosed the clash ensued around 9:45 a.m. in Barangay Datagan, Guipos, this province.

Luzon said the clash ensued when his scout platoon led by 2Lt. Ronald Fuentes were deployed to scour Barangay Datagan following the reported presence of NPA rebels in the area.

Luzon said the NPA fled to different directions leaving behind six radio transceivers, four battery chargers, three antennas, a magazine bandolier, subversive documents of high-intelligence value and personal belongings.

He said the group of NPA rebels that figured in the clash with the troops were remnants of the Sandatahang Yunit Pampropaganda (SYP) Platoon of the Front Committee Kara operating in this province.

He said two persons, including a pregnant woman, who were believed to be NPA supporters were apprehended near the clash site.

However, he said they were released after undergoing debriefing.
