Two suspected New People’s Army rebels and an Army soldier were killed following a clash in Negros Occidental Friday morning, a regional military spokesman said.
Citing field reports, Maj. Ray Tiongson of the Army's 3rd Infantry Division, said the encounter erupted around 7:40 a.m. when patrolling troops from the Army's 79th Infantry Battalion engaged 12 insurgents at Sitio Bugtong Lubi in Barangay Damutan in Hinobaan town.
Tiongson said the firefight lasted for 15 minutes, afterwhich the rebels fled. The bodies of the slain rebels were left behind.
Also recovered from the clash site were an M653 baby
Armalite rifle, two rifle grenades, a magazine with live ammunition and other
personal belongings.
Tiongson said that aside from one fatality, another soldier was wounded during the clash but is now in stable condition.
Lt. Col. Harold Anthony Pascua, 79th IB commander, said the troops were deployed after receiving information that armed insurgents were reportedly extorting money from the residents there.
