From the Philippine Information Agency (Dec 28): PNoy thanks US, Japan for help in AFP Modernization
President Benigno Aquino III thanked the United States and Japan for their contributions in the modernization program of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).
In his speech during the 80th anniversary of AFP, President Aquino said Japan would be supplying three Beechcraft TC-90 King Air that can be fitted with basic surface and air surveillance radar along with Lockheed Martin submarine-hunting P3-C patrol planes.
Earlier, Japan pledged to beef up the Philippine Coast Guard by providing 10 brand new patrol boats come 2016.
On top of these, the two countries shall expand bilateral and multilateral trainings and exercises.
Meanwhile, United States (US) President Barack Obama announced during his visit last month for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit that they would be providing the Philippine Navy with a third Hamilton-class cutter and a research vessel.
The Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement, which allows greater US military presence in the Philippines, is meant to improve the territorial defense and humanitarian assistance and disaster response capabilities of the two countries.
