The Eastern Mindanao Command (Eastmincom) has denounced the extortion racket being employed by the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army-National Democratic Front (CNN) to collect protection money in exchange for permits to campaign (PTCs) from election candidates in Eastern and Southern Mindanao.
The statement deplored how the rebels have resorted to “utilizing threats, intimidation, terror and violence (to) infringe upon the constitutional rights of the people to choose the best leaders who can bring real reforms through good governance.”
“EastMinCom again advises the candidates against giving in to the demands of the CPP-NPA-NDF bandits as the extortion money can be used to sustain the armed struggle through violence and intimidation against innocent civilians and properties,” the statement said.
The command also took note of the hype presented by NDF-Mindanao on their claim of increase in terms of forces and influence in the area.
“The fact remains clear that for the whole of year 2015 alone, there has been a significant reduction in CPP-NPA-NDF capability in all parameters,” Eastmincom said.
With the help and efforts of stakeholders, the number of regular NPA members in Eastern Mindanao was reduced by 17% or 344, majority through surrenders and the number of affected barangays was reduced by 27% or 152, and 5 guerrilla fronts were dismantled, the Eastmincom emphasized.
The command also presented that on the same period the high powered firearms of the NPAs reduced by 148.
“The CNN decline in Eastern Mindanao is evidenced by its simple holding of anniversary celebration. Many of the stakeholders particularly those former rebels and victims of CPP-NPA-NDF atrocities have come out in the open to expose its dirty tactics; which include the radicalization of students and mobilization and exploitation of the Indigeous People (IPs).”
