NPAs urged to observe holiday truce

From the Philippine News Agency (Dec 25): NPAs urged to observe holiday truce

As the entire nation celebrates the Christmas Season, the Eastern Mindanao Command on Friday called on the New People's Army (NPA) to refrain from attacking military units and observe their declared Yuletide truce.

This call was made following the attacks perpetrated by the NPA rebels against two military detachments and a community security patrol, all on Dec. 23, 2015; the first day the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) declared ceasefire.

The CPP earlier announced a 12-day unilateral ceasefire that runs from Dec. 23, 2015 until Jan. 3, 2016.

In the Dec. 23 attacks, NPA forces harassed a military detachment in Barangay Bitaugan, San Miguel, Surigao Del Sur at 9:20 a.m.; another detachment in Barangay White Kulaman, Bukidnon at 6:15 a.m.; and attacked Army troops on community security patrol in Barangay Sumimao, Paquibato District, Davao City.

Capt. Alberto Caber, Eastern Mindanao Command public affairs office chief chief, said the attacks took place as the EMC suspended its offensive operations in adherence to the 12-day suspension of military operations (SOMO) announced by President Benigno S. Aquino III last Dec. 18.

The government-declared SOMO started midnight Dec. 23 and will end midnight of Jan. 3, 2016.

Despite this, the EMC assures the public that it will continue to support law enforcement and peace and development activities.
