Government authorities based in Jolo, Sulu have arrested a
member of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) who was involved in the kidnapping of
foreigners, an official announced Friday.
Brig. Gen. Alan Arrojado, Joint Task Group Sulu commander,
identified the arrested Abu Sayyaf brigand as Saddam Jailani, who was arrested
Friday.
Arrojado said Jailani was arrested in a special intelligence
operation by combined military, police and National Intelligence Coordinating
Agency (NICA) personnel around 2:40 p.m. Friday at the port of Jolo ,
the capital of Sulu.
Arrojado said Jailani has a standing warrant of arrest for
kidnapping issued by the Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 9 of Cebu.
Arrojado said Jailani is a follower of ASG sub-leader
Alhabsy Misaya, whose group was responsible for the kidnapping of two Malaysian
and Korean nationals.
He said Jailani was immediately taken to this city for
proper disposition.
Meanwhile, he said preemptive measures have been undertaken
to prevent retaliatory attacks by the ASG on “soft targets” following the
arrest of Jailani.
He said the conduct of checkpoints have also been
intensified in and around Jolo town and in nearby areas.
