Seven armed bandits were killed by Philippine Marine combatants in a clash Thursday morning in a remote village in the coastal town of Palimbang, Sultan Kudarat.

The clash occurred in the village of Butril, according to local officials and Philippine Marine authorities based in Kalamansig, Sultan Kudarat.

Palimbang is about 10 kilometers south of Cotabato City.

According to Maulana Kugi, a village official of Butril, the encounter started when gunmen, led by a certain Jaafar Maguid, opened fire on approaching combatants of the 1st Marine Brigade, triggering an hour long firefight.

The Marines were sent to the village to check on reports that Maguid's group was mulcting "protection money" from farmers, mostly Mauguidanaon farmers.

Kugi said Maguid was known in the village as leader of a gang of extortionist mulcting even ordinary folks. He has string of cases that include cattle rustling and illegal drug pushing.

A Marine official said the clash left seven of Maguid's followers dead but their remains were taken by his group.

He said Maguid, also known as commander Tokboy, was leading his men in the Sitio Sinapingan in Barangay Butril when they ambushed a team of Marine elements.

Maguid has about 40 armed followers. They quickly fled when they saw reinforcement of about 100 Marine fighters.

Clearing operations were still on going with the 6th Marine Battalion recovered assorted firearms and ammunition stained with blood.

Kugi said in a radio interview that dozens of Maguid's followers were believed injured.
