A soldier assigned to the Joint Task Group Basilan was
killed while defending his civilian companions from an Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG)
ambush in Sumisip town, Basilan Wednesday afternoon.
The incident took place at 2:30 p.m. in Limbo Candis,
Sumisip, in the said province.
Joint Task Group Basilan spokesperson 1st Lt. Sally Magno
said that the soldier, who is still unidentified pending notification of his
next-of-kin, was with two civilian companions aboard two motorcycles when
flagged and fired upon by the ASG bandits.
Magno said the group was supposed to visit relatives in the
area prior to the attack.
She added that the slain trooper was a member of a peace and
development team operating in the locality.
Despite being wounded, the soldier returned fire and engaged
the brigands, giving time for his companions to escape.
Before dying, the lone soldier was able to inflict
casualties on the ASG bandits before they retreated.
Pursuit operations are still ongoing as of this posting.
