A Maguindanaon woman peace advocate has filed her certificate of candidacy for senator last Friday with a vow to continue working for peace in Mindanao should be given the opportunity for a senate seat.
Nariman "Ina" Ambolodto, Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Assistant Secretary for Muslim Affairs and Special Concerns of the of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), eyes to be the second Muslim woman senator.
She is one of the ruling Liberal Party's senatorial candidates for the next year's national elections.
Ambalodto, wife of human right lawyer Suharto Ambalodto, has served as member of the provincial board and acting provincial governor of Maguindanao.
The senatorial aspirant was appointed acting governor when the late Governor Andal Ampatuan, Sr. was arrested after the 2009 Maguindanao massacre.
In her incumbency as acting governor, Ambalodto focused on developing human resources and financial management tapping development partners for technical assistance.
The LP leadership cited the reforms she instituted in the province and the efforts to convince foreign donor agencies to continue supporting the province after the massacre in Ampatuan town which drew worldwide condemnation.
The first Filipina Muslim senator was Santanina Rasul, a Tausog educator, who served in the senate from 1987 to 1995. After her, some Muslim leaders joined senatorial race but none has won.
