A military camp based in Isabela province is the latest
favorite destination of tourists who want a unique place to visit, different
from the usual resorts, caves, and churches in different provinces of Region 2.
This is the three-hectare Integrated Organic Farm being
maintained by the 77th Infantry Battalion, 5th Infantry Division based in the
five-hectare military camp in Camp Melchor F. dela Cruz, Upi, Gamu, Isabela.
Col. Francisco Millare, 77th IB Commanding Officer, said the
farm which was established in June last year has been visited by more than
3,000 guests from 80 groups who came to see the only certified organic farm in
Cagayan Valley region.
"We adopted integrated farming, where we have planted
some fruit trees and in between are different kinds of vegetable, making it
more diversified, for daily consumption in the camp and nearby
communities," Millare said.
The military official said February this year no less than
experts from the University of the Philippines (UP) Los Banos certified it to
be a hundred percent organic farm. Even the Agriculture Training Institute of
the Department of Agriculture (DA) based in the City of Ilagan have also recognized the farm as a
learning site, like other demonstrations sites that the DA-ATI maintains.
Millare said the farm only came as a consequence of what
they earlier adopted, the Eco-Composting Technology, to manage solid wastes in
the camp. He said, from the technology, they produced volumes of composts as
fertilizer.
“The volume of compost that we produced triggered the
expansion of our small plots of vegetables to which the organic fertilizers are
applied. We also adopted the vermiculture technology where we produce vermicast
to be used as fertilizer as well”, he added.
