Why were Special Action Force commandos in the January 25 anti-terror operation in Mamasapano, Maguindanao so brutally killed?
MILF chief negotiator Mohagher Iqbal reiterated the killings were the result of a misencounter between the MILF, other armed groups and the SAF troops.
He pointed out that aside from the 44 commandos, 18 Moro rebels were also killed in the firefight.
"Both sides were using high powered caliber guns dahil masyado pong matataas kaliber ng armas. Sa tingin ko, ganun ang nangyari. Ang natamaan ay talagang malubha," he said.
Iqbal denied that the MILF has control over the whole area of the encounter, saying the group only exercises "a certain percentage of control."
An MILF official earlier said he does not believe that an MILF fighter is the one who was caught on video killing a SAF trooper who was still twitching on the ground in Mamasapano.
