MAMASAPANO, Maguindanao – This is Barangay Tukanalipao, a village in the municipality of Mamasapano in Maguindanao. It is a stronghold of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and its breakaway group, the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF). It is also the site of the bloody clash between members of the Philippine National Police's Special Action Force (PNP-SAF) and the Muslim rebels, killing at least 65 and endangering a peace process that took 17 years.
The PNP-SAF were on a manhunt of top terrorist Zulkifli bin Hir, alias Marwan, a bombmaker responsible for several explosions in the Southern Philippines.
Watch this aerial footage of the terrain that sheltered Marwan and killed off 44 commandos.
