From Ang Malaya (Feb 26): Japan, PHL navies to undertake capacity and capability building activities

Admiral Tomohisa Takei, Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force commander, who arrived in the country Monday for a four-day official visit “discussed concerns on maritime domain awareness and challenges” in the South China Sea with the Armed Forces of the Philippines deputy chief-of-staff Lt. Gen. Virgilio Doming. Admiral Takei also had a meeting with Philippine Defense Undersecretary Honorio Azcueta and Philippine Navy chief Vice Adm. Jesus Millan.

Public affairs officer of the Philippine military Lt. Col. Harold Cabunoc said “they also expressed mutual interests in conducting bilateral naval exercises and disaster response operations in the future.”

Philippines and Japan’s defense chiefs “Memorandum on Defense Cooperation and Exchanges between the Ministry of Defense of Japan and the Department of National Defense of the Republic of the Philippines” that will facilitate closer relationship between Japan Self-Defense Forces and Armed Forces of the Philippines in security and defense field last January.

“What we discussed are more on future interactions to develop our capacity and capability, more on training, ship visits and technical assistance or consultations,” said the Philippine Navy chief.
