MILF commander denies involvement in Mamasapano encounter

From InterAksyon (Feb 4): MILF commander denies involvement in Mamasapano encounter

A commander of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) implicated in the Mamasapon encounter with members of the Philippine National Police-Special Action Force (PNP-SAF) on Wednesday denied involvement in the incident that killed 44 police commandos and 25 Moro fighters and civilians.

MILF 118th Base Command Commander Abdulwahid Tundok told Brigada Cotabato this morning that he and his team were in the town of Datu Saudi and not in Barangay Tukanalipao, Mamaspano Maguindanao when the firefight started Sunday morning.

Former PNP SAF Commander Chief Leocadio Santiago linked Tundok to the encounter.

"Nasa bahagi kami ng bayan ng Datu Saudi at imposibleng agad agad na makakaabot ang mga kasamahan ko sa Brgy Tukanalipao (We were in the town of Datu Saudi and it was impossible for us to immediately reach Barangay Tukanalipao)," Wahid said.

The MILF commander said he and his team have long supported the Mindanao peace process.

He also denied that they are coddling the two terrorists identified by the United States.

"Kami mismo ang tumutugis kay Basit Usman at Marwan (We ourselves are going after Basit Usman and Marwan)," Wahid said.
