Bomb explodes in bus in Philippines

From the Mindanao Examiner BlogSpot site (Feb 4): Bomb explodes in bus in Philippines

At least 4 people were injured when a bomb explosion Wednesday ripped through a commuter bus in Surigao del Norte province in southern Philippines, officials said.

Officials said the bomb went off inside the Bachelor Bus which made a brief stopover in the village of Hayanggabon in Claver town around noontime. The air conditioned bus was heading to Tandag City from Surigao City when the blast occurred.

Troops from the 30th Infantry Battalion were dispatched to help policemen secure the area as authorities investigate the attack.

Army Major Ezra Balagtey, a spokesman for the Eastern Mindanao Command, said police were gathering pieces of evidence as part of the investigation to determine what type of explosive was used in the attack.

“The incident caused damage to the bus and four people were wounded in the blast,” he told the regional newspaper Mindanao Examiner.

The powerful blast tore the left side of the bus where the explosive had been planted.

No individual claimed responsibility for the bombing, but it occurred just as security forces tightened its watch on possible terror attacks following the killing by police commandos of Malaysian bomber Zulkifli bin Hir, alias Marwan on January 25 in Maguindanao’s Mamasapano town.

But 44 commandos were also killed when they clashed with armed members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front when they strayed right into the territories of the former rebel group which signed a peace deal with Manila last year.

It was unknown if the bombing was connected to the killing of Zulkifli.
