Malacanang on Monday said the declaration of one-month
ceasefire will enable Filipinos enjoy the spirit of yuletide season and the New
Year in peace.
Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said the
implementation of Suspension of Offensive Military Operations (SOMO) and
Suspension of Offensive Police Operations (SOPO) from Dec. 19 to Jan. 19 is in
line with the Philippine government Christmas tradition.
“Government has always wished to provide for our people's
peaceful and joyful celebration of this holy season and a hope-filled welcome
to a new year,” Lacierda said, quoting Presidential Adviser on the Peace
Process Secretary Teresita Quintos-Deles.
Further, Lacierda said cessation of hostilities will
likewise allow unhampered rehabilitation of calamity-affected communities.
“It will also set the tone for the much-anticipated Papal
visit in January. With the silencing of guns, our preparations for and celebration
of Pope Francis' visit may be carried out with undistracted prayers and deep
hope for abundant blessings to be showered on our people,” he added.
The one-month yuletide ceasefire was jointly announced by
the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and Philippine National Police (PNP).
