Governor Ryan Luis Singson assisted Colonel David Diciano, commander of the Philippine Army's 701st Infantry Brigade in turning over the P85,000 check to couple–rebel returnees under the "Guns for peace Program" of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) over the weekend.
The check was received by couple Arnold Mendoza and Jenevic Soriano of Santa Lucia and Cauayan, Ilocos Sur, respectively, in a simple rite last Sunday at the headquarters of the Army's 81st Infantry Batallion based in Barangay Sulvec, Narvacan, Ilocos
Governor Singson is also looking for job placement for Soriano, who graduated as “cum laude” at the University of Northern Philippines (UNP) and herself a registered nurse.
The Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO) of the local government unit of Narvacan also assured assistance to the rebel returnees.
It was reported that both Soriano and Mendoza joined the New People’s Army (NPA) in the late 1990s but surrendered in 2002.
Today, the former rebels have two children and are living peacefully in Santa Lucia town.
