Army deploy(s) augmentation forces in North Cotabato town to thwart BIFF harassment

From the Philippine News Agency (Aug 26): Army deploy(s) augmentation forces in North Cotabato town to thwart BIFF harassment

Additional military forces were deployed in a remote village here after suspected members of the (Bangsamoro) Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) harassed a militia detachment Sunday afternoon that left a civilian wounded, authorities said.

Police identified the victim as Jendy Pelinte, a farmer from Barangay Popoyon, who happened to be near the detachment of 39th Infantry Battalion and Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit (CAFGU).

Captain Calvin Macatangay, speaking for the 602nd Infantry Brigade, said about 50 BIFF forces emerging from the Maguindanao marshland positioned about 200 meters from the Army-CAFGU detachment and opened fire at past 4:00 p.m.

After the bandits fired the first shot, the soldiers and militiamen returned fire forcing the attackers to retreat toward the marshland.

Macatangay said Pelinte, who was tilling his farm at the time, was hit by stray bullets in his legs.

He is now recuperating at a local hospital.

Catapang said the augmentation forces were deployed in the borders of Maguindanao and North Cotabato.

Police and military authorities in the province consider the BIFF as the number one threat to North Cotabato because of its frequent harassment against civilian communities in the boundary.

The BIFF is a breakaway group of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).
