The military in the Visayas said it arrested Tuesday an alleged commander of the new People’s Army in Bais City, Negros Oriental.

Major Ray Tiongson said Nilda Bertulano, alias Frea, was arrested around 4 a.m. at Crossing Tamisu.

Bertulano was facing an arrest warrant for rebellion and murder filed before the Regional Trial Court 6th Judicial Region Branch 60 in Cadiz City, Negros Occidental.

“(She was arrested) while onboard a motorcycle going to the Mabinay, Negros Oriental area (and) was brought to the police station in Bais City for proper disposition,” Tiongson said.

He said surrendered rebels identified Bertulano as the commanding officer of the Front Operational Command of Larangang Gerilya 1, the NPA unit responsible for various attacks in Central Negros, one of which led to the death of Lieutenant Archie Polenzo of the 62nd Infantry Battalion in Cadiz City in April 2010.

“She was also involved in the (burning) of (a) transloading station on March 16, 2008 in Barangay San Jose, Toboso, Negros Occidental where two cranes, four prime movers and a ten-wheeler truck of Victorias Milling Corporation in Lopez Sugar Central were burned by the NPA,” Tiongson said.

“Last November 2, 2008, Bertulano was among the NPA members who raided the La Libertad PNP station in Negros Oriental, where they carted away five M16 rifles, uniforms and personal belongings of the police personnel,” he added.
