A woman said to be a ranking leader of the New People’s Army in the Visayas was arrested Thursday in Guiuan, Eastern Samar, the military said Friday.
Edna Montes was captured in Barangay 8, Guiuan after being served a warrant of arrest for murder charges filed against her before the Regional Trial Court in Oras, Captain Amado Gutierrez, spokesman of the Army’s 8th Infantry Division.
“Edna Montes holds various positions in the New People’s Army. She is the head of the educational department of the Eastern Samar Provincial Party Committee and at the same time the secretary of the Eastern Samar Provincial White Area Committee.
She was also a former member of the executive committee of the Eastern Visayas Regional Party Committee of the New People’s Army,” Gutierrez said.
She is the third alleged Eastern Visayas rebel leader to be captured following the arrest of Juan Paolo Rodrigo Verzosa, alleged NPA intelligence officer of Samar, and his wife Grace, staff reproduction bureau member of the Eastern Visayas Regional Party Committee, on June 28, 2013 in Marikina City.
