An encounter between Army troops and a supposed unit of the New People’s Army (NPA) resulted in the death of one suspected rebel in Sorsogon early morning on  Saturday, Army said.

Lieutenant Colonel Medel Aguilar, acting spokesman of the Army’s 9th Infantry Division in Bicol, said the firefight started at 5:30 a.m. around the vicinity of Barangay (village) Gabao, Irosin, Sorsogon.

He said that there was one yet to be identified fatality from among the rebels.

Sorsogon, including that of the area where the clash happened, is under the jurisdiction of 9ID’s 903rd Infantry Brigade.

Last July 4, Thursday, an Army platoon under the 31st Infantry Battalion also encountered a 20-man unit of NPA rebels in Juban, Sorsogon where eight rebels died in the firefight.
