Residents flee as armed group enters Maguindanao village

From InterAksyon (Jul 5): Residents flee as armed group enters Maguindanao village

Residents of a village in South Upi, Maguindanao evacuated to the town center due to tensions triggered by the presence of some 200 gunmen.

Barangay Lamod chairman Mama Binangon, who is also president of South Upi’s Association of Barangay Captains, said the villagers began fleeing Thursday and most of them are housed at the town’s Noro Upi gymnasium.

Binangon claimed the gunmen were followers to a defeated mayoralty candidate.

Following the May 13 elections, the Lamod residents also fled their homes to escape being caught between two feuding commanders of the Moro National Liberation Front.

They returned home only after the police, military and the MNLF leadership stepped in to defuse tensions.

On May 11, a mayoralty candidate in the town was also ambushed. A nephew of the candidate was killed and a supporter wounded.

Military and police personnel have been deployed to monitor the situation in Lamod.
