A
member of the Army's Peace and Development Team deployed at Barangay Datagan,
Guipos, Zamboanga Del Sur was killed after being fired upon by New People's
Army rebels affiliated with the Western Mindanao Regional Party Committee.
The
incident took place around 8 a.m. Friday, military officials said.
According
to Lt. Col. Victor S. Tangawohn, 53th Infantry Battalion commander, his men
were conducting peace and development operation at Barangay Datagan, Guipos,
Zamboanga del Sur were on board a motorcycle on their way to their headquarters
when fired upon by undetermined number of NPA rebels.
Cpl.
Danilo Saavedra, the rider of the motorcycle, was hit by bullet on his back but
was able to return fire before he passed away while Pfc. Rommel Taneo, who was
able to jump out, returned fire.
Pursuit
operations are still ongoing as of this time.
