A former rebel-turned-government militiaman was killed on Sunday by a group of armed men believed to be communist rebel hit men who roused him from sleep in Agusan del Norte province, reports said on Tuesday.

Reports sent to Camp Crame by the Caraga Regional Police Office identified the fatality as Nife Lapora, 23, married and a former communist rebel who became a member of Citizen Armed Forces Geographical Unit (Cafgu). The reports said that the shooting took place at about 9 p.m. on Sunday at District 9, Barangay Camagong in Nasipit, where the victim has been living since becoming a Cafgu member.

Lapora reportedly took a nap on a stockpile of falcata logs near a videoke house when a group of armed men approached and roused him from sleep, the reports said.

The reports added that while Lapora was conversing with one of the armed men, another member of the group pulled out a gun and shot Lapora twice hitting him on the chest and killing him the spot.

Joint elements of the army’s 58 Infantry Battalion and Public Safety Company from Agusan del Norte’s police office were dispatched in the area to chase the fleeing gunmen.
