From the Philippine News Agency (Jan 22): NPA rebels attack DOLE Company

Armed men believed to be members of the communist New People’s Army (NPA) attacked DOLE Plantation and damaged equipment in Tago, Surigao del Sur on Friday. A belated Army report here said that eight armed men accompanied by an undetermined number of people raided the company’s banana plantation past 7:00 p.m. Friday and destroyed six-hectare banana plantation.

Lt. Col. Virgilio F. Luna, commander of the army’s 29th Batallion, said that the unidentified group also indiscriminately fired at the company-owned heavy equipment damaging four backhoes and one bulldozer. He said army troopers failed to capture the the armed group who withdrew towards the hinterland of barangay Anahaw Daan.

Luna urged witnesses in the area to provide information to authorities that would lead to the arrest of the perpetrators. He said the Army was coordinating with government line agencies to ensure peace and security in the area.
