7 soldiers wounded in Basilan ambush

From the Philippine News Agency (Jan 22): 7 soldiers wounded in Basilan ambush

The Western Mindanao Command (Wesmincom) has launched a pursuit operation against the Abu Sayyaf bandits who ambushed patrolling troops on Tuesday in the hinterlands of Basilan province.
Wesmincom information officer Col. Rodrigo Gregorio disclosed that seven soldiers were wounded when the Abu Sayyaf bandits ambushed them around 7:40 a.m. Tuesday in the boundary of Barangays Amaloy and Bohe Pahu, Ungkaya Pukan town.

Gregorio disclosed the troops from the Army’s 4th Scout Ranger Battalion were conducting security patrol when they were ambushed by the Abu Sayyaf. However, Gregorio said a 20-minute firefight followed after the ambush as the troops, despite seven of them were wounded, managed to return fire.

The Abu Sayyaf rebels fled upon sensing the arrival of reinforcement, he said. The wounded soldiers were airlifted to the Camp Navarro General Hospital (CNGH) in this city. Gregorio disclosed that troops from the Basilan-based Army’s 104th Infantry Brigade are pursuing the fleeing Abu Sayyaf bandits.
