From the Philippine News Agency (Nov 15): Army soldiers conduct ‘Harvest
Festival’ in Davao Oriental
The military recently conducted “Harvest Festival” aimed to provide alternative
livelihood for residents in Barangay Tagboa, Lupon here.
Col. Reuben Basiao, commander of the 72nd Infantry Battalion, said hundreds
of residents benefited from their community-based project “Gulayan” after they
harvested more than 60 kilos of upo, five kilos of okra and five kilos of string
beans from their 500-square meter vegetable garden.
The military detachment’s “Gulayan” is among the model projects on vegetable
production using organic fertilizer especially prepared by the CAFGU Active
Auxiliary (CAA) and military personnel trained by the Department of Agriculture
(DA) regional office.
The "Harvest Festival" in the said CAA Patrol Base "Gulayan", was also
participated by the faculties and Parents Teachers Association officials and
students from Macangao Agricultural Tagboa Extension High School, barangay
health officials, barangay officials and local populace of the place.
Lt. Benedict Joy Corpuz, Bravo company commander of 72nd IB, said that after
establishing a model “Gulayan” in barangays, their trained personnel will
continue to extend their technical expertise and manpower to train and assist in
the creation of “Gulayan sa Paaralan” projects and will soon expand the said
livelihood to other sitios as they deploy their Community Development Teams
(CDTs).
Basiao said they are putting efforts to transform the CAA getting involved in
various community-based activities to support the local chiefs in their
respective areas in creating productive and secure communities.
