From the Philippine Star (Nov 10): 1 rebel killed, rifles recovered in Surigao
Government troops clashed anew with leftist rebels in southern Philippines yesterday, killing one insurgent and seizing a number of rifles, the military said today. The encounter happened as soldiers conducting combat patrol in the vicinity of Caras-an village, Tago town, in Surigao del Sur province chanced upon some 25 heavily-armed guerrillas of the New People's Army (NPA) at around 9:55 a.m. Thursday, said Lieutenant Colonel Eugenio Julio Osias IV, spokesperson of the army's 4th Infantry Division. "A 30-minute fire fight ensued that resulted to the killing of an unidentified rebel whose body was recovered at the scene of fire fight. No one from the government troops was hurt," Lieutenant Colonel Osias said in a statement. The soldiers also recovered an AK-47 and M-16 assault rifles. The army spokesperson said pursuit operation against the fleeing insurgents is going on. The 4,000-strong NPA, an armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, has been fighting a 43-year leftist insurgency in 60 Philippine provinces.
