Abra, Philippines – Military and members of the New People’s Army engaged in a 5-minute firefight in Barangay Anayan, Tineg, Abra on March 23, 2022.
The armed clash transpired after the community told authorities about the presence of Kilusang Larangang Guerilla (KLG)-North Abra in their area despite having been declared Persona non grata, the 5th Infantry Division reported.
It was said that while the government troops were conducting a focused military operation at the community, members of the said group fired at the operating personnel, resulting in the latter to retaliate.
The exchange of bullets lasted for five minutes before the rebels withdrew to the east direction.
24th Infantry Battalion Commander Lieutenant Colonel Ricardo Gary Garcia III mentioned that the troops were able to recover a piece of rifle grenade, 4 magazines for M16 rifle, a piece of bandolier, and 27 pieces of 5.56mm ammunition from the encounter site.
This March 2022, the Province of Abra was put by the higher headquarters under the operational control of the 5th Infantry Division. This move was made to clear the province of the communist terrorist group.
Major General Laurence Mina, 5ID Commander, conveyed his gratitude to the residents in Abra for supporting the campaign against insurgency and lauded the efforts of the 24IB in protecting the community from atrocities.
“The Province of Abra was added to our Area of Responsibility to clear it from the influence and presence of the insurgents,” he stated.
Meantime, a day after the encounter in Abra, another firefight between the authorities and rebels ensued in Barangay Aplaya, Maconacon, Isabela.
