Camp Navarro, Calarian, Zamboanga City – October 12, 2021

A follower of the Sulu-based Abu Sayyaf Group/Kidnap-for-ransom group surrendered to the military in Tawi-Tawi on October 11.

Abu Sayyaf Group member Maja Misal, a.k.a. Madz/Mitz, 21 years old and presently residing in Barangay Silubong, Bongao, Tawi-Tawi, yielded to the troops of the Joint Task Force Tawi-Tawi at around 9:00 a.m. Monday. He handed over one M1 Carbine rifle with a magazine and 10 rounds of live ammunition.

According to Colonel Romeo Racadio, Commander of JTF Tawi-Tawi, Misal is the son of the late ASG member Misal Jumsah who was killed during an encounter with the government forces at Sitio Kanbaddal, Barangay Panglayahan, Patikul, Sulu sometime in 2017. Following the death of his father, Misal went on lie-low status.

Major General Alfredo Rosario, Jr., Commander of Western Mindanao Command said Misal made the right decision and spared himself from being killed in armed confrontations. “He is still young and a brighter tomorrow awaits him. We are here to assist him in his reintegration into mainstream society,” Major General Rosario, Jr. stated.

“We want to work for peace without the use of arms and prevent bloodshed, and, in this light, we are encouraging other Abu Sayyaf bandits, as Filipinos, to lay down their arms and return to the folds of the law. We continue to work closely with the local government and our partners to turn the strongholds of the Abu Sayyaf into a peaceful community,” the commander added.

The surrendered personality was subsequently presented to the local government of Tawi-Tawi at the headquarters of the 2nd Marine Brigade in Sanga-Sanga, Bongao where he received a sack of rice, one water container, and a box of assorted food packs from TABANG BARMM. Present during the ceremony were Tawi-Tawi Provincial Police Office Director, Police Colonel Bonard Briton; Bongao Municipal Administrator Mary Ann Abdulmunap; and MILG OIC Provincial Director Cidrimar Maring.

Misal is the 4th ASG member who surrendered in Tawi-Tawi this year.
