Kabacan, North Cotabato - The Coordinating Committee on the Cessation of Hostilities (CCCH) and the Ad Hoc Joint Action Group (AHJAG) of Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) jointly conducted Peace Advocacy against Violent Extremism with the theme: “Unity is Sustaining the Gains of the GPH-MILF Peace Process” held at 8th Avenue Katidtuan-Hotel, Resorts, and Convention Center, Kabacan, North Cotabato on August 28, 2021.
Such activity was packed with insightful messages delivered by different peace key actors including representatives from the International Monitoring Team (IMT), Local Monitoring Team (LMT), Special Geographic Area (SGA) of BARMM, Philippine National Police of Kabacan, 602nd Infantry Brigade of Philippine Army, Joint CCCH-AHJAG of the Philippine Government, Madaris Education of Ministry of Basic, Higher, and Technical Education (MBHTE), and the Sub-committee on Qur’anic Affairs of the MILF.
Hon. Habib Guiabar from LMT-MILF formally welcomed the guests and participants on this event. He expressed his warmest gratitude to the organizers for the realization of such event which manifested one of the gains of the peace process by being able to conduct peaceful activity that is far from the situations before where people are hiding at the jungle in the quest for the attainment of genuine peace.
MILF-CCCH Chairman Butch Malang officially opened the program and he emphasized the mandate of ceasefire mechanisms that is to facilitate various forms of conflicts and disputes in different conflict-affected areas within and outside the BARMM to enable a conducive environment for smoother implementation of the GPH-MILF Peace Agreements.
Sheikh Mas-od Lantong Mohammadali, the Chairman of MILF Sub-Committee on Qur’anic Affairs and con-current consultant of the MILF-CCCH, enlightened the participants on the topic “Qur’an is a Message of Peace and a Complete Way of Life.” He emphasized that Islam as a religion was taken from the word “Salam” which means peace. It is a way of life that enjoins whatever is beneficial to mankind both in this world and in the hereafter and forbids all forms of harm and destructions including violent extremism, in reference to the authentic teachings of the Qur’an and Sunnah (practices) of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
Madaris Education of MBHTE-BARMM was also represented by no other than its Director-General Sheikh Tahir Nalg who discussed about “Education as a tool to end conflict and violent extremism.” In his message, he highlighted that one of the gains that the Bangsamoro earned from the establishment of BARMM is the enhancement of its educational system that integrates Islamic and secular education. It is envisioned that through this effort, the Bangsamoro, especially the young ones, will be equipped with a balanced education that is free from violent and extreme ideologies.
From the Hay-ato Ulama El-Muslimina Bil-Filibbin, Inc., Secretary-General Sh. Abdulhadie Gumander discussed their roles in assisting the Bangsamoro Government in upholding Moral Governance. Several types of research are conducted to identify the most viable concepts in this regard which will serve as the guide of the Bangsamoro Leaders towards their commitment to implement morally upright governance leading towards peaceful and progressive Bangsamoro.
Maj Gen Datuk Hamdan Bin Hj Ismail, the Head of Mission of the IMT – M16 also graced the program and delivered his keynote speech which highlighted the preservation of gains of the peace process for a stable and secured generation. He enjoined everyone to support the GPH-MILF peace efforts by strong collaboration among all the stakeholders and adherence to the peace agreements and protocols set forth. He also encouraged everyone to sustain the spirit of mutual understanding for the sake of peace and a brighter future for the next generation. The Government of Malaysia has been supporting the GPH-MILF Peace Process for about 16 years, and he assured their continued support for lasting peace and success for the Bangsamoro.
For the message of support and commitment, also present were Col. Joel Mamon, Head of Combined Secretariat of the GPH CCCH and AHJAG, PCpl. Genesis Pasa Bendor of PNP-Kabacan, Sh. Saad Delna who represented the Office of MP Aida Silongan, Hon. Kelly Antao, the Coordinator of SGA-BARMM, and leaders of MILF Political Committees from Ligawasan, Kapalawan, and North Cotabato Provinces. These personalities reassured their support and commitment to become agents of peace in their respective areas of responsibility and also encouraged unity and collaboration among all stakeholders to effectively counter the influence of violent extremism.
To formally close the program, Chairman Anwar Alamada of MILF-AHJAG said that everyone has a tendency to become extreme but becoming violent should be avoided at all times because of its disastrous impact. He further stated that extremism is fueled by oppression and injustices, and the Ceasefire Mechanisms, under the leadership of the GPH-MILF Peace Implementing Panels, are exerting their full efforts to mitigate, if not eradicate, the problems arising from violent extremism.
This program was made possible in partnership with the Union of Muslim Youth Organizations (UMYO), Moro International Students Association (MISA), League of Bangsamoro Organizations (LBO), and Bangsamoro Multimedia Network (BMN).
Unity is a condition of harmony which results to peaceful and progressive community. This event manifested the serenity and fulfillment that are brought by unity among the key stakeholders including the Ulama, the Leaders, the Business Sector, and the mass people. Indeed, in unity, there is strength to promote peace and harmony in society.
