A communist New People’s Army (NPA) combatant was killed in a 25-minute firefight with government troops in the Zamboanga del Sur town of Dumingag Monday, the military said.
Brig. Gen. Leonel Nicolas, commander of the Army's 102nd Infantry Brigade, said the 10:30 a.m. clash in Barangay Marangan, Dumingag, broke out when the troops of the 53rd Infantry Battalion spotted a group of NPA rebels while on a combat operation.
Nicolas said the firefight resulted in the death of a rebel, whose comrades scampered in different directions.
He added that the troops also recovered four high-power firearms consisting of two M-16 Armalite rifles, one AK-47 assault rifle, and one M-203 grenade launcher.
Troops are tracking down the fleeing communist NPA terrorists as of this posting, he said.
“Our deliberate operations against the annihilators of peaceful communities in our area of operation continues,” said Lt. Gen. Corleto Vinluan, Jr., commander of the Western Mindanao Command.
Vinluan said the weakened structure of the communist NPA terrorists gives the military "more resolve to further intensify the offensive against the remaining members of the terror group."
