CLAVERIA, Misamis Oriental -- A wounded rebel was saved by quick-thinking soldiers who applied first aid on his gunshot wounds before he was brought to a hospital following a firefight in the Misamis Oriental town of Claveria on Sunday (Sept. 20).
In a statement Monday, the Army's 58th Infantry Battalion (58IB) identified the captured New Peoples Army's (NPA) rebel as Arnel Ramos, 32, a squad leader.
According to the 58IB, Ramos--a resident of Gingoog City--was hit on his right thigh and right arm during the series of skirmishes around 8:20 a.m. Sunday.
Government soldiers recovered several firearms, ammunition, and personal belongings of the rebels at the clash site, said Lt. Col. Ricky Canatoy, 58IB commander.
Canatoy called on the remaining NPA regulars to "lay down your arms and live peaceful and normal lives to avoid the unnecessary waste of lives. However, those who will persist in hindering peace, we will continue to use force to protect the people".
Canatoy said the wounded NPA combatant was turned over to the Army's 4th Infantry Division hospital and is now recuperating.
