Government troops recovered over the weekend two high-powered firearms reportedly stashed by members of the New People’s Army (NPA) in an outskirt village in Malapatan town, Sarangani province.
Lt. Col. Ronaldo Valdez, commanding officer of the Army’s 73rd Infantry Battalion (73IB), said the two M16 Armalite rifles were found buried in a shallow ditch in a forested area in Sitio Salyan, Barangay Sapu Masla last Saturday.
Valdez said the location of the firearms was disclosed by an NPA combatant identified as Nito Bago who surrendered to government troops in Sitio Luot, Barangay Poblacion on Saturday morning.
“We immediately organized a unit to locate and dig up the firearms and eventually found them disassembled at the reported spot,” he said in a report released on Sunday afternoon.
The recovery of the firearms was the second for the 73IB in Malapatan in the past week. Acting on information from two NPA surrenderers, troopers also unearthed an AK47 and a Garand rifle at a portion of Sitio Mahayag in Barangay Upper Suyan on February 25.
Valdez said Bago – the fourth NPA combatant who surrendered in the past week and the 30th since the second week of January – is under their custody and has been given initial interventions.
He said Bago was a former member of the “weakened” Guerilla Front 71 (Tala) of the NPA-Far South Mindanao Region. Three NPA regulars from Front 71 also surrendered in Poblacion, Malapatan on February 26.
Valdez said the surrenderers would receive various incentives and assistance packages under the government's Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program, which will provide them with livelihood assistance and other necessary interventions.
