Some 600 Negrenses from various localities in southern and central Negros Occidental condemned the atrocities of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army (CPP-NPA) in a gathering held at La Carlota City on Saturday.

The indignation rally coincided with the interment of Negrense policeman, Capt. Efren Espanto Jr., team leader of Regional Mobile Force Battalion-Western Visayas Reconnaissance Company,
who died during a clash with the NPA rebels in Janiuay, Iloilo on February 12.

Espanto, who hails from La Carlota, was laid to rest at the La Carlota Memorial Park on Saturday morning.

Capt. Kelvin Bayaban, who heads the Philippine Army’s 32nd Civil Military Operations Company, said they laud the people of La Carlota for honoring the life of Espanto, a victim of the CPP-NPA atrocity.

The gathering at the city public plaza, which was supported by the Philippine Army and the Philippine National Police, was also attended by representatives from various sectors in neighboring La Castellana, Moises Padilla, San Enrique and Pontevedra towns.

They were joined by around 60 former members and supporters of militant farmers’ group Kilusang Magbubukid nang Pilipinas from Barangay Nagasi, La Carlota.

The group denounced all forms of violence and terrorism perpetrated by the CPP-NPA among the farmers’ sector and vowed not to be used to organize people and gain support from the masses.

All the participants marched from Doña Hortencia Salas Benedicto National High School campus going to the plaza, where they held a short program attended by a former rebel, who shared his experience being deceived by the CPP-NPA.

On Feb. 25, a similar activity was held in Bago City, where a wake was held for Espanto. About 300 Negrenses had joined the rally to condemn the CPP-NPA atrocities and pay tribute to the slain policeman, held in front of the Manuel Y. Torres Coliseum.
