A top finance officer of the New People’s Army (NPA) in the tri-boundary of Davao-Caraga- Northern Mindanao Regions was killed in a military operation around 11 a.m. of Wednesday, February 5, in San Ignacio, Butuan City.

Eastern Mindanao Command (EastMinCom) Spokesperson Lt. Col. Ezra Balagtey
identified the slain NPA as Manuel G. Magnate, alias Jino and Saldo, of the Regional Operations Command and concurrently Head of Intelligence Special Operations Group of the Southern Mindanao Regional Committee (SMRC).


Balagtey said Magante was killed when he resisted and fought with an inter-agency team of the military and police which was about to serve warrants of arrest against him for the crimes of robbery with homicide and robbery issued by Judge Hilarion P. Clapis Jr. of the Regional Trial Court Branch 3 of Nabuturan, Davao de Oro.

He said operatives recovered a two caliber .45 pistols and ammunition a motorcycle, cellphone and laptop.

Balagtey said Magante was also involved in numerous violent atrocities targeting military personnel and civilians such as the murder of Datu Ruben Labawan in 2015; abduction of Jail Warden Coquilla of Compostela in 2015; abduction and murder of Loreto, Agusan del Sur Mayor Dario O. Otaza and his son Darryl O. Otaza in Butuan City last 2015; disarming of the peace and order personnel of Brgy. Mahungcog, Magpet in 2016; and burning of construction company heavy equipment in Brgy. Callawa, Davao City in 2018.
